Children's Rituals

Learning About Ritual

We know that ritual is a way of celebrating the good things in our lives and connecting us more fully with Nature and the God and Goddess. One of the easiest ways to show this to your child is to help them with their own ritual. This is an example of a simple ritual that will mean something to your child and help them begin to learn about why and how we hold rituals.

Full Moon Rituals for Kids

The children of our Coven meet every month and participate in a Full Moon ritual, with guidance from their parents. They all enjoy the rituals and look forward to them each month. Each of the following rituals was created by one the parents in our Coven for all the children of our group. Although the rituals were written for a group of children, each one would function perfectly for a single child as well.

Full Moon for Helping Children Increase Their Confidence

(You will need colorful string or yarn and charms)

Before ritual begins, talk about what confidence is and the purpose behind making the charms in ritual.

Circle is cast by child walking the perimeter of the circle repeating... "I cast this circle with delight… whirling and twirling in the moonlight. All magick done, to others masked by my will, this circle is cast."

Quarters are called by child in his/her own words

Call Spirit

Have the child sit on the floor or at the altar to make their bracelet.

Make bracelets by stringing charms on string or yarn.

Take charm bracelets to the East: Ask East for the ability to understand what they are learning

Take charm bracelets to the South: Ask South for the ability to make good choices

Take charm bracelets to the West: Ask West for the ability to make good friends.

Take charm bracelets to the North: Ask North for the ability to be themselves.

Lift the charm bracelets above your head and ask that Spirit always guide you.

Tell your child that as he/she wears this bracelet, they should always remember that they are smart, funny, and well loved)

Naming of a Pet (or Familiar)

By Raven Spirit

One of the neatest things to do as a child is to have a pet. Not only does it teach responsibility for the animal but it also will connect the child with the totem of this animal. What animal does your child feel drawn to? Now this may take some time to work with them as if they would like to have a horse as a familiar and you life in a two-bedroom apartment, this may not be possible. So you will need to work with what you have. See what kinds of animals they seem drawn to. Do they spend more time looking for puppies, or kittens, or maybe even a bird.

Have the child sit in a circle out in the yard or a park

With the child sitting holding their pet have them invite the elements (Parents will want to cast a circle first)

Have the child then ask the elements to bless the new pet

Then ask the Lord and Lady to watch over it so they can learn from each other

Present the pet to the Lord and Lady telling them its name and how you are going to care for it

Then go to the quarters and introduce the animal to the Elements telling them its name, and how you will care for it.

Thank the Lord and Lady and the Elements

Leave a small gift at the spot you named the pet
